I created Savory and Savvy to flex my culinary skills and keep us on track with our food budgeting.
I’m passionate about food but eating in the Bay Area is expensive! Plus, the cost of food continues to increase along with everything else in San Francisco.
After scrutinizing and analyzing all our expenses, the real eye-opener was looking at our food bills. The aha moment for me, as Oprah would say, was realizing that our food expense was our most controllable expense. Plus, one of our biggest opportunities to reduce spending and save money. The recipes on this blog are, first and foremost, delicious.
You’ll find a lot of plant-based and vegetarian recipes because it’s cost-efficient. However, you’ll still find meat and seafood recipes because I eat everything. Don’t worry. 🙂 It’s all about balance and not depriving myself of what brings me joy.
A little about me… Bay Area is currently my home but I’ve lived all over. I’m a former New Yorker who grew up in Guam and Japan. I’ve been cooking at home since I was 16 years old living alone in an apartment in Japan. (True story.)
I love food and it has been a central part of my life. Ever since I was a child, food instantly put me in a cheerful mood. Just like the picture above. That’s me blissfully and unapologetically eating the entire contents of a bag of sour cream and onion potato chips.
Many years later, my relationship with food remains the same.
Cooking an awesome meal at home on a budget involves planning, discipline, and research but the important thing I’ve learned is to take that first step and keep moving forward no matter what. I believe that the more I do this the better I will get and the more I will grow, hopefully not sideways. 😉

A little about Kimmie
Kimmie is an 8-year old tabby rescue we adopted from an animal shelter last year.
She keeps us grounded with her adorableness and makes us laugh all day long. Kimmie is the best cat ever and we are so lucky she chose us.
